Understanding crypto airdrops
Airdrops are one of the few ways to earn crypto without buying it. They are also noisy and full of scams. This guide explains how they actually work so you can decide what is worth your time.
What an airdrop is
A project gives free tokens to a set of wallets, usually to reward the people who used it early or to spread ownership before a token launch. You qualify by doing something the project values, then a snapshot records who is eligible.
The main types
- Retroactive. Rewards past usage of a live product. Uniswap and Arbitrum are the classic examples. You cannot game these after the fact.
- Testnet. Rewards testing a network before mainnet. Usually free, medium effort, and uncertain.
- Holder. Rewards holding a specific token or NFT at snapshot time.
- Task-based. Rewards completing quests on platforms like Layer3 or Galxe.
How to qualify safely
- Use a fresh or dedicated wallet, never your main one.
- Interact genuinely: bridge, swap, hold, come back over time. Sybil farming gets filtered out.
- Confirm every link on the project's official channels first.
- Never send funds or share a seed phrase to "claim" anything.
Before you touch any campaign, read how to avoid airdrop scams, then browse the airdrop tracker.
FAQ
What is a crypto airdrop?
An airdrop is when a project distributes free tokens to a set of wallets, usually to reward early users or decentralise ownership. You typically qualify by having used the project or a related network before a cut-off called a snapshot.
Are airdrops free?
The tokens are free, but qualifying often costs gas fees for on-chain actions, and always costs time. Anything asking you to send funds to receive an airdrop is a scam.
What is a snapshot?
A snapshot is a moment when the project records wallet balances or activity. If you qualified before the snapshot you are eligible; actions after it usually do not count.
How long until I receive airdrop tokens?
It varies from weeks to over a year, and many expected airdrops never happen. Treat any value as speculative until tokens are actually claimable.
Do I need to pay tax on airdrops?
In many jurisdictions airdrops are taxable as income at receipt and again on disposal. Rules differ by country. This is not tax advice; check your local rules.
Informational only, not financial advice. Airdrops are speculative and carry risk.
