Paycheck breakdowns
Paid every other Friday? Two months a year you get a third paycheck.
Biweekly pay means 26 paychecks a year, so two months bring a third one. How to find your three-paycheck months and give that money a job.

Why it happens
A year has 52 weeks, so a biweekly schedule pays 26 times. Twelve months × 2 paychecks is only 24. The two extra paychecks land in the months where the calendar lets a payday fall on the 1st or 2nd and again at the very end.
Which months depends on the year and your first payday. If your first 2027 payday is January 8, the three-paycheck months are April and October. If it's January 1, 2027 brings 27 paydays, with January, July and December each getting three.
How to find yours
Open a calendar, mark your next payday, and count forward 14 days at a time to the end of the year. Any month with three marks is a third-paycheck month. The sinking fund calculator lists every payday between two dates if you'd rather not count by hand.
This only works when your bills already follow the biweekly paycheck budget method, and the paycheck budget calculator does that math for you. Then the extra check can go straight to your sinking funds.
Give it a job before it arrives
If your bills are budgeted per paycheck (monthly × 12 ÷ 26), the third paycheck isn't needed for any fixed bill. That's exactly why it tends to vanish: nothing claims it. Decide in advance where it goes.
- Top up the emergency fund.
- Fill a sinking fund that's behind (holidays, car, annual bills).
- Make one extra debt payment to the target card.
- Keep a slice as planned fun money, so the rest sticks.
If you budget monthly
If your budget assumes two paychecks a month, the third one feels like a bonus. It isn't: it's the money your monthly budget was missing in the other ten months. Budgeting per paycheck fixes both problems at once.
Plan both of them now
Write the two months on your calendar and give each third paycheck a job today. One way: the first one tops up the emergency fund, the second fills the holiday sinking fund. Or split each one: half to the target debt, half to savings.
If you're paid weekly instead, four months a year bring a fifth paycheck. The same idea applies: budget four paychecks a month and decide in advance what the fifth one does.
What the extra money can do
Two biweekly paychecks of $1,500 are $3,000 a year that a per-paycheck budget doesn't need for bills. Pointed at a $600 holiday sinking fund and a $2,400 emergency fund target, that's both goals met in a single year without touching a normal paycheck.
Or put both toward debt: on the $8,000 three-card example, an extra $3,000 in a year shortens the payoff by many months and saves hundreds in interest. The exact choice matters less than making it before the paycheck arrives.
The takeaway
26 paychecks, 12 months: plan on 24 and decide today what the other two will do.
FAQ
How do I know which months have three paychecks?
Start from your next payday and add 14 days at a time through the year. Months with three paydays are your three-paycheck months; they change from year to year.
Can a year have 27 biweekly paychecks?
Yes. When the first payday falls very early in January, some years have 27, as 2027 does with a January 1 start.
Should I budget the third paycheck?
Not for fixed bills. If bills are budgeted per paycheck, the third one is free to fund savings, sinking funds or extra debt payments.
